Your Abbotsford Auto Repair FAQ

Welcome to the Abbotsford auto repair FAQ from Butch’s Automotive — the questions Abbotsford drivers ask us most about repairs and maintenance. Tap any question to expand it, or give us a call and we’ll talk it through.

Butchs Automotive services all makes and models, from Toyota Camrys to F-350 diesels and everything in between. All of our technicians have had extensive training to be the best in Abbotsford. So no, you don’t need a fleet to come see us.

We want to make sure everyone in the Fraser Valley has a great mechanic — and that’s us.

When this happens, there are a couple questions I always start with: Did you just fill up your fuel tank? Does the vehicle feel or run any differently than normal?

If you just filled up and the light came on shortly after, you most likely left your fuel cap off or loose. But if your vehicle is behaving noticeably differently, I’ll always recommend towing it in or driving straight to us to avoid further damage.

The check engine light is your first warning sign, and it’s worth taking seriously.

Honestly, sometimes I’d say factory-recommended intervals aren’t enough. Dealer-recommended services are often spaced too far apart in kilometres, which causes premature wear.

Our maintenance schedules are sometimes half of what dealerships recommend, because our goal is simple: we don’t want you replacing your engine or transmission. Maintenance is far cheaper than the alternative.

Dealerships benefit when you spend $10,000 to $20,000 on a new engine. We don’t.

At Butchs Automotive, we create custom service plans for every fleet vehicle we service. Every time your fleet vehicle comes in, we don’t treat it like a quick lube shop. We study, inspect, and use qualified technicians to figure out exactly what’s needed to keep that truck on the road.

Does that make it more expensive? No. Over the life of that vehicle, our approach will get you more mileage, more years, and less downtime than any other shop. We are fleet specialists.

Every vehicle is different, and we see everything here. I’ve had two customers with the exact same vehicle — one meticulous about maintenance and one who doubles or triples the recommended intervals. Sometimes the neglected one surprises you and runs fine, but that’s not the norm.

I always tell customers: maintenance is far cheaper than any hard repair. When you take care of your vehicle with a shop that actually cares, you’ll see it last longer — and you’ll feel confident driving it knowing it won’t let you down.

Maintenance. If you’re going to neglect anything on your vehicle, don’t let it be your fluids. Do your oil changes before they’re due. If your vehicle has an oil life monitor, don’t wait for 0% — get it done at 20%. If your transmission fluid is starting to discolour, change it. If your antifreeze isn’t testing well, change it.

Do what’s required, when it’s due. That’s how you get to 300,000 km.

There are a few common causes. First, tires — whether it’s the rubber itself or a balancing issue. I’ll usually ask if you recently got new tires or had them rotated. Second, worn suspension components, which would need a proper inspection to diagnose. Third, brakes — if the shaking only happens when you apply the brakes, that points to something in the braking system.

All of these are safety concerns. Bring it in and we’ll figure it out.
