How to Check Brake Pads Without Removing the Wheel

You can perform a basic inspection of your brake pads through the spokes of your wheels.

• Look through the wheel spokes to locate the brake caliper and the brake rotor.

• Inspect the outer pad pressed against the metal rotor.

• Measure or estimate the remaining friction material thickness.

• Use a flashlight or tire depth gauge if the area is shaded or difficult to view clearly.

If the friction lining measures less than 1/4 inch (about 3 to 4 millimeters), schedule a professional inspection. If it measures 1/8 inch (3 millimeters) or less, the pads require immediate replacement to prevent metal-on-metal contact.
